Kiwanis Serves Children

The Kiwanis Club of Arlington was chartered in August, 1954, by the Kiwanis Club of Burlington.  There were 31 members in the club, with Jim Hammer as President.

Fourteen Committees were established by the club with all of the members participating.  The Committees emphasized the needs and concerns of Arlington.

Some of the first activities for the new club were offering support for the Arlington school district bond measures and  helping with the annual U.G. N. Drive. The Bond measure passed and the U.G. N. drive was successful.  Other support was given to the Boy Scout Troop, Arlington High School football program and Darrington basketball accomplishments.  This is typical of the support that most Kiwanis Clubs give to the communities in which they serve.

Kiwanis Clubs around the world have always been concerned with and involved in the welfare of young people and their families.

Kiwanis Clubs typically meet once a week for their regular meetings.  Their membership is open to all people, regardless of color, creed or religious affiliation.  Women were allowed to join in 1986.  Membership in most clubs include couples and because of convenience have added the stimulus for membership growth.  The average size of clubs in the United States is about 50 members.

Kiwanis  Sponsored Youth Programs include: Kiwanis Kids for students between the ages of 6 & 12, Builders Club for middle and junior high age students, Key Club International for high school students, Circle K International for university students.  Local Kiwanis Clubs sponsor the various  school age clubs.  Advisors for clubs in schools are from school administration and staff.  Kiwanis International empowers people at every stage of life to become competent, capable and compassionate leaders by helping them learn to help others.  Through its Service Leadership Programs, Kiwanis enables its yougest leaders to serve their communities, opening doors for them to change the world.

The  Kiwanis Club of Arlington meets at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. The address is 18513 59th Av. NE, Arlington, WA 98223.  For more information call David Boulton, Secretary, (360) 435-5789
